The Milestone Wizard

Every child, on track and thriving — milestones, activities & materials by age and state.

New to teaching, or just want a clear starting point? Here's the idea: children grow in predictable steps called developmental milestones — the skills most children can do by a certain age, like stacking blocks, taking turns, or speaking in short sentences. Every state publishes its own early learning standards built around these milestones, and knowing them is what separates "watching the children" from truly teaching them.

This wizard puts your state's expectations in plain language, in three steps: pick your state, pick the child's age, and instantly see what children that age are typically working on — movement, language, thinking, social-emotional skills, and more. Under each milestone you'll find ready-to-use activity ideas for your classroom and suggested toys & materials that build exactly that skill.

Use it to plan your week, set up centers with purpose, prepare for parent conferences, or simply understand why a two-year-old and a four-year-old need such different days. Every child develops at their own pace — this is a teaching guide, not a test. When you know what comes next, you can gently invite it. That's the whole art.
